Shikakai (Acacia concinna) is a climbing shrub native to India. Its dried pods are ground into a powder traditionally used as a natural shampoo. Rich in saponins, shikakai gently cleanses hair without stripping natural oils.

Shikakai powder acts as a natural cleanser, removing dirt and excess oil while maintaining hair’s natural oils. It is believed to strengthen hair roots, soften hair and reduce dandruff due to its antifungal and antibacterial properties.

The powder may also encourage hair growth by stimulating the scalp, though evidence is mostly anecdotal. In Ayurvedic practice, shikakai is mixed with amla and yoghurt to create nourishing hair masks.
